Four Ways To Prepare Yourself For A Job Interview

Posted on

Only about 62.7% of Americans are working, according to CNN Money; this means there are millions of people out of work and looking for a job. When you find yourself out of work with no job, getting that call that you have an interview with a prospective employer is a great thing. But the interview process could be the one thing standing in between you and getting that job, so you want to make sure you are well prepared when you go. All interviews are different depending on the employer and the job. But while you may not know exactly what they plan on asking you, you can still get ready by preparing yourself ahead of time. Here are four ways you can get through that interview and increase your chances of landing that job.

Do Your Research on the Company and Interviewer

Before your appointment with the interviewer, you want to make sure you take the time to get to know what the company is about. You want to look for things they do in the community, what type of products or services they are involved with, and even the company's history. Knowing all this about the company shows to the interviewer you are not only interested in the job but interested in the company as well. Additionally, if you know the name of the person who is planning on interviewing you, it is a good idea to look them up as well. Find out if you know people in common. This will help you connect better with the interviewer.

Bring Samples of Your Work

It is a no brainer to have your resume and cover letter with you when you show up for the interview, but it is also a good idea to bring samples of your work. Programs you have implemented, Powerpoint presentations you have given, and even spreadsheets showing your performance can help provide the interviewer with your work history. This helps to show off your skills instead of just telling what your skills are.

Check Your Social Media

Just as you plan to do your homework before the interview, the company may also check up on you. Your social media accounts are a good way for a company to see what you have been up to and what type of character you posses. If you have a lot of pictures and posts about partying, this is not going to look good when the company you want to work for is checking it out. You want them to take you serious. In an effort to show them your best side, you want to remove any pictures or posts that could have a negative effect on you.

Plan Your Route

Once you have the address of the place you are going to for the interview, you should do a trial run. Make sure you travel the route during the same time as your interview so you can get an idea of how traffic will be. This is a great time to check out the area and familiarize yourself with the roads so you can make sure you leave in plenty of time to get to the interview on time.
